Program Description: Let’s go for a hike with the bats and listen for the things that go bump in the night along the way. Bats are a wonderfully diverse group of mammals throughout the world. We owe so much of our livelihoods to bats. They provide a variety of ecosystem services. We will discuss these services and the habitats that bats need to survive in Connecticut. We will explore potential conservation actions that you can do in your backyard to help bats in Connecticut. You will see how scientists “listen” to the bats and the high-tech equipment they use while investigating them. Remember to dress for the weather and bring a flashlight. Remember to protect yourself from biting insects by wearing pants, long sleeves, and insect repellent.

Speaker Introduction: James Fischer is the Research Director at The White Memorial Conservation Center, Inc. in Litchfield. His research investigations include working with bats and other small mammals and associating these animals with water quality and land conservation issues.
