This six mile or less hike will highlight the beautiful stone walls throughout the property. While it will mostly be on carriage roads\, it may be muddy so please dress accordingly. AT THIS TIME\, THIS EVENT IS AT CAPACITY!\n\n\nJoin Great Hollow’s naturalist\, John Foley\, and Candlewood Valley Regional Land Trust director\, Bill McCann\, for a special guided tour through Great Hollow Nature Preserve and the neighboring Michael Ciaiola Conservation Area\, as we celebrate National Trails Day.\n\n\nWe’ll first pay a visit to Great Hollow’s resident birds of prey and then trek through fields and forests along the Red Trail while making our way up to the Tucker’s Run waterfall. From there we’ll take a short snack break and learn about the history of the “Hollow\,” and why it has become one of the area’s most ecologically significant protected areas. Afterward\, we’ll continue our hike through a hemlock forest along our Orange and Yellow Trails\, while learning some basic tree identification tips and searching for migrant birds (bring binoculars if you own a pair).\n\n\nThe hike will be moderately challenging in some areas and feature both steep uphill and downhill terrain\, so wear sturdy footwear. The hike will likely last around two hours. Please meet in Great Hollow’s visitor parking area by the main entrance at 10am. Well-behaved\, leashed dogs are welcome to join.\n\n\nAttendance will be capped to allow for social distancing so please register in advance by emailing John at jfoley@greathollow.org.

DESCRIPTION:Join Cheryl Rykowski and Karen Monger of The 3 Foragers for a guided forage at Komlo Preserve in New Fairfield where you may happen upon fresh berries\, wild greens\, edible flowers\, and summer fungi. \nHike Details\nThis is not an aggressive hike\, but a slow\, 2-hour forage with frequent stops to identify edible plants such as fresh berries\, wild greens like lamb’s quarters and sheep sorrel\, edible flowers\, and summer fungi such as oyster mushrooms or assorted boletes. Refreshments will be served after the hike. \nHikers should carry a notebook and pen for taking notes\, a knife or scissors\, and a paper bag to collect specimens. Dressing for the weather and possible ticks is essential\, along with a bottle of water. All wild plants and mushrooms should be identified and verified with multiple sources before consuming. All participants are responsible for their own actions. The hike can be challenging in some areas and features both steep uphill and downhill terrain\, so\nwear sturdy footwear. DESCRIPTION:Join Cheryl Rykowski and Karen Monger of The 3 Foragers for a guided forage at Bear Mountain Park in Danbury\, CT where you may happen upon fresh berries\, wild greens\, edible flowers\, and summer fungi. \nHike Details\nThis is not an aggressive hike\, but a slow\, 2-hour forage through Bear Mountain’s easiest trails with frequent stops to identify edible plants such as fresh berries\, wild greens like lamb’s quarters and sheep sorrel\, edible flowers\, and summer fungi such as oyster mushrooms or assorted boletes. Refreshments will be served after the hike. \nHikers should carry a notebook and pen for taking notes\, a knife or scissors\, and a paper bag to collect specimens. Dressing for the weather and possible ticks is essential\, along with a bottle of water. All wild plants and mushrooms should be identified and verified with multiple sources before consuming. Learn about the history of the “Hollow” and why it has become one of the most ecologically significant areas of both Fairfield County\, CT and Putnam County\, NY. \nWe will enjoy a scenic vista overlooking northern New Fairfield\, trek over a rocky ridgeline\, make our way down into a hemlock ravine\, break for a snack at the Tuckers Run waterfall\, and finally return back to the Merritt House at Great Hollow. The hike can be challenging in some areas and features both steep uphill and downhill terrain\, so wear sturdy footwear. Bring a light snack/lunch and most importantly\, water. \nWe will carpool over to the Michael Ciaiola Conservation Area trailhead off of Old Stage Coach Rd. \nRSVP’s are appreciated! Parking in this area can be a challenge\, so arrive early.\n\nNABBY ROAD\nMeet CVRLT board member Rich Hlavenka at 10:00 am in the parking area behind Stew Leonard’s Liquors on Nabby Road.\n\nLONG RIDGE ROAD\nMeet CVRLT board member David Campbell at 9:30 am at the Long Ridge Library on Long Ridge Road. If you drive to this location\, please park along the small lane leading to the library on the far side of the stream.\n\nPlease come equipped to handle trash: gloves and sturdy boots (waterproof if possible). DESCRIPTION:On January 1\, 2018\, the full moon will rise at 9:25 pm.  Join with others on Komlo Preserve\, one of the properties belonging to The Candlewood Valley Regional Land Trust\, for a short stroll and gathering to view the full moon and bring in the New Year. \nAdult and non-alcoholic beverages and snacks will be served.  This preserve is an idyllic setting with open meadows\, wildlife sanctuary\, forested wetlands\, a man made pond and it is situated right in the center of town. This donation came from Joseph Komlo as the Open Space for the Dunham Pond Condominiums. The pond\, which was made when gravel was mined for the building of Route 37\, is home to a wide array of wildlife. Beavers\, ducks and geese all rely on this habitat. There is also a sizable heronry right at the edge of the forest. This property is the southern end of the Shortwoods Brook Aquifer.  This gift certificate good for four people – a value of $80 donated by The Candlewood Valley Regional Land Trust.
