SUMMARY:Earth Day Hike @ The Roy Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Led by CVRLT Board Member\, Cheryl Rykowski\, come join Candlewood Valley Regional Land Trust on Saturday\, April 20th at 10AM for an Earth Day hike and come see our new property\, the Roy Preserve! \n \nWe will meet at 1 Deal Drive in Danbury – make sure to park along the street. We’ll hike approximately two miles on the Ives Trail via the Old Post Road\, to CVRLT’s newest acquisition\, the Roy Preserve. We’ll loop the property (about a mile) and then hike back. The entire hike should take about 3 hrs. +/-\, depending on weather and stops to bird watch and have snacks. \nThis is an easy to moderate hike over mostly flat\, but rocky and possibly wet ground. Please wear appropriate hiking shoes and bring water and snacks or lunch. We will hike in a light mist but if weather is truly bad\, we will cancel and alert all who have signed up via email. Please check your email the night before and the morning of the hike. We hope you’ll join us! \nRegistration is required. DESCRIPTION:CVRLT will be participating in New Fairfield’s Earth Day event on April 22nd (rain date\, 4/23) at Memorial Field\, located at 4 Brush Hill Road in New Fairfield\, CT. \n\n \n\n\n9:00 – 10:00 – Residents can pick up trash bags at Town Hall to collect garbage in their community and return trash for town removal \n\n\n\n10:00 – 11:00 – CVRLT’s Board Member\, Jayne Morin\, is leading a hike at Komlo Preserve. Meet at 9:45am at the Komlo property at 130 CT-Route 37 in New Fairfield\, behind the Nuvance Health building. This will be an easy\, relaxed hike with mindfulness exercises. Boots recommended. Leashed dogs welcome \n\n \n12:00 – 3:30 – CVRLT will participate in the Earth Day Celebration at Memorial Field. AT THIS TIME\, THIS EVENT IS AT CAPACITY!\n\n\nJoin Great Hollow’s naturalist\, John Foley\, and Candlewood Valley Regional Land Trust director\, Bill McCann\, for a special guided tour through Great Hollow Nature Preserve and the neighboring Michael Ciaiola Conservation Area\, as we celebrate National Trails Day.\n\n\nWe’ll first pay a visit to Great Hollow’s resident birds of prey and then trek through fields and forests along the Red Trail while making our way up to the Tucker’s Run waterfall. From there we’ll take a short snack break and learn about the history of the “Hollow\,” and why it has become one of the area’s most ecologically significant protected areas. Afterward\, we’ll continue our hike through a hemlock forest along our Orange and Yellow Trails\, while learning some basic tree identification tips and searching for migrant birds (bring binoculars if you own a pair).\n\n\nThe hike will be moderately challenging in some areas and feature both steep uphill and downhill terrain\, so wear sturdy footwear. The hike will likely last around two hours. Please meet in Great Hollow’s visitor parking area by the main entrance at 10am. Well-behaved\, leashed dogs are welcome to join.\n\n\nAttendance will be capped to allow for social distancing so please register in advance by emailing John at jfoley@greathollow.org.

DESCRIPTION:Join Cheryl Rykowski and Karen Monger of The 3 Foragers for a guided forage at Komlo Preserve in New Fairfield where you may happen upon fresh berries\, wild greens\, edible flowers\, and summer fungi. \nHike Details\nThis is not an aggressive hike\, but a slow\, 2-hour forage with frequent stops to identify edible plants such as fresh berries\, wild greens like lamb’s quarters and sheep sorrel\, edible flowers\, and summer fungi such as oyster mushrooms or assorted boletes. Refreshments will be served after the hike. \nHikers should carry a notebook and pen for taking notes\, a knife or scissors\, and a paper bag to collect specimens. Dressing for the weather and possible ticks is essential\, along with a bottle of water. All wild plants and mushrooms should be identified and verified with multiple sources before consuming. All participants are responsible for their own actions. Please\, no dogs on this forage. \n \nMeeting Time and Place\n9:45 am at Komlo Preserve to start the hike at 10 am. \nDriving Directions\nEnter 130 Route 37\, New Fairfield for GPS and take that driveway straight back (it forks to the left) on to the\ndirt road to arrive at Dunham Pond.
